Comida SRQ: The Sarasota Restaurant That Made My Gluten-Free Friend Feel Like a VIP
Written by Kim Donahue, REALTOR® with Medway Realty | 30+ Years of Real Estate Experience · Updated August 7, 2026
A few weeks ago, one of my closest girlfriends came to visit me in Sarasota. She lives out of town, so I wanted to take her somewhere special — somewhere that felt like a real Sarasota evening, not just another dinner out.
There was one catch. She has celiac disease, which means gluten is off the table completely. Anyone who has spent time with someone with celiac knows the drill. You scan menus anxiously. You call ahead and ask questions. You hope there will be more than one safe option, and you brace yourself for the moment when the server shrugs and says, "Honestly, I'm not sure."
I wanted my friend to feel taken care of. I wanted her to have a meal where she did not have to think about what she could not eat. I wanted her to feel like a guest, not a problem to be accommodated.
That is how we ended up at Comida SRQ. And honestly, it exceeded every expectation I had.
The Experience
From the moment we walked in, I knew we had made the right choice. The space at 1534 State St in downtown Sarasota is warm and inviting — stylish without feeling pretentious, with an energy that makes you want to settle in and stay a while. The lighting is soft, the music is right, and the atmosphere feels like a place that cares about the details.
The service was the first thing we noticed. Our server was warm, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu. When I mentioned that my friend was gluten-free, there was no hesitation, no awkward pause, no "let me check with the kitchen." Instead, our server smiled and walked us through exactly what was available, pointing out recommendations and explaining how the kitchen handles dietary restrictions.
For my friend, this moment mattered more than I think our server realized. She is used to being an afterthought at restaurants — handed a gluten-free menu with three options while everyone else at the table enjoys the full experience. At Comida SRQ, she could choose from almost everything on the menu. Not as a compromise. Not as a consolation. As a guest.
I watched her face change over the course of the evening. The guarded look she usually carries into restaurants, the one she has developed from years of being disappointed, softened. She relaxed. She ordered what she wanted. She trusted the food.
That alone would have made the night worth it, but the food took everything to another level.
The Food
We started with the guacamole, which arrived at our table prepared fresh. It was perfect — creamy, bright, beautifully seasoned, with just the right balance of lime and salt. It disappeared fast.
Next came the beet salad. I am not someone who orders salad and calls it the highlight of a meal, but this one made me reconsider. The beets were tender and sweet, paired with fresh greens and a dressing that tied everything together without overwhelming it. It was the kind of starter that sets the tone for the rest of the evening — beautiful on the plate and even better on the palate.
And then came the cowboy steak.
I have had a lot of steaks in my life, and this one is going to stay with me. It arrived perfectly cooked, with a beautiful char on the outside and a perfect medium-rare center. The seasoning was bold but not heavy, and every bite had that depth of flavor that comes from proper technique and quality ingredients. It was presented beautifully, too — the kind of dish that makes you reach for your phone to take a picture before you let yourself dig in.
My friend ordered off the same menu. She did not have to ask for substitutions. She did not have to explain herself. She just picked what she wanted and it arrived exactly as described, safe and delicious.
We finished with dessert. The flan was silky and rich, with that perfect caramelized top that cracks just right when you break through it. The flourless chocolate cake was deep, fudgy, and completely satisfying. Both were gluten-free. Both were spectacular. Neither felt like a compromise.
That is the thing about Comida SRQ. Every dish we tried felt intentional. Nothing tasted like it was made for a restricted menu. It tasted like food that was made because someone cared about how it would land on the table.
The Verdict
This was not just a good meal. It was a five-star experience from start to finish.
The food was extraordinary. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was exactly what you want for a special evening in Sarasota — relaxed enough to feel comfortable, elevated enough to feel like an occasion.
But the part that stayed with me was watching my friend. Somewhere between the guacamole and the flan, she stopped being the gluten-free friend at the table and just became herself. She laughed. She lingered. She ordered dessert without checking the ingredients three times. She said it was the best restaurant she had been to in a long time — and the fact that she could eat everything on the menu made it even more meaningful.
As someone who loves this city and loves the people in my life, that is exactly the kind of night I wanted to give her.
