Friday, August 21

Classic Movies at the Opera House: The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)

Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Avenue, 7:00 PM. Tickets available through the Sarasota Opera. The Summer and Fall Classic Movies series continues with Cecil B. DeMille's Academy Award-winning circus drama, filmed in stunning Technicolor and featuring an ensemble cast including Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, and James Stewart. Watching a classic film in the historic Opera House is a singular experience — the acoustics, the architecture, and the grand atmosphere transform movie night into something special. The Opera House's air-conditioned comfort also makes it a welcome escape from the late August heat.

HD at the Opera House: Samson and Delilah

Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Avenue, 1:30 PM. A high-definition screening of Camille Saint-Saens' opera Samson and Delilah, presented in the Opera House's stunning setting. A perfect afternoon cultural outing for opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Kevin McCaffrey -- Live Comedy at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre

McCurdy's Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Boulevard, shows at 6:30 PM and 8:50 PM. Tickets from approximately $45. Kevin McCaffrey brings his nationally touring stand-up act to McCurdy's for a weekend run. McCurdy's is Sarasota's premier comedy venue, and a Friday night show there is a great way to start the weekend with laughter. The 6:30 PM show works well for an early dinner-and-comedy evening, while the 8:50 PM set suits a later night out.

Namaste at The Bay Yoga

The Bay Sarasota, 1055 Boulevard of the Arts, 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Free. The summer yoga series continues at Sarasota's bayfront park. Start your Friday morning with outdoor yoga on the lawn overlooking Sarasota Bay. All skill levels are welcome, and the bay breeze makes the August morning comfortable. Bring your own mat and water.

Bradenton Marauders vs. Jupiter Hammerheads

LECOM Park, Bradenton, 6:30 PM. Minor League Baseball action as the Bradenton Marauders take on the Jupiter Hammerheads. While LECOM Park is technically in Bradenton, it is a short 15-minute drive from Downtown Sarasota and makes for an easy Friday evening outing. The ballpark has a family-friendly atmosphere with affordable tickets and concessions.

Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market

Lemon Avenue and Main Street, 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Free admission. Rain or shine. The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market is a weekly tradition that has been bringing the community together since 1979. Over 80 vendors offer local produce, fresh-baked bread, honey, artisan crafts, plants, and prepared foods. August brings the best of Florida's summer harvest — local mangoes, avocados, citrus, and vine-ripened tomatoes. Arrive early for the best selection and enjoy the lively Main Street atmosphere as the morning unfolds. Live music from local musicians adds to the market's energy.

The Bay Sarasota

1055 Boulevard of the Arts, sunrise to sunset. Free. Sarasota's 53-acre bayfront park is always open and always free. Spend Saturday exploring the native gardens, walking trails, and playgrounds, or simply find a shady spot by the water with a book. The Bay's mangrove preserve and educational signage make it a great option for families with curious kids. Bring a picnic lunch from the Farmers Market and make an afternoon of it.

Saturday Night Downtown Dining

Main Street and Palm Avenue, Downtown Sarasota. Saturday evening is prime time for exploring Sarasota's downtown dining scene. From Italian and seafood at Main Street institutions to creative small plates at newer spots on Palm Avenue, the options are broad and excellent. Many restaurants offer outdoor patio seating that comes alive on summer evenings. Reservations are recommended for the more popular spots.

Sunday Stroll on the Bayfront

Sarasota Bayfront and Marina. A Sunday morning walk along Sarasota's Bayfront is one of the simplest and best things to do in the city. The Bayfront Park paths connect the marina, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, and The Bay Sarasota into a continuous waterfront walking route. Stop for coffee at one of the nearby cafes, watch the boats come and go from the marina, and enjoy the relaxed Sunday pace that makes Sarasota feel like a permanent vacation.

Explore the Sarasota Art Museum

Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design, 1001 S. Tamiami Trail. Open Sunday. Housed in the historic former Sarasota High School building, the museum features rotating contemporary exhibitions and a stunning architectural blend of old and new. Waterside Place, 1560 Lakefront Drive, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Free admission. Every Sunday, over 100 local vendors set up at Waterside Place offering organic produce, fresh flowers, specialty spices, honey, artisan bread, baked goods, and prepared foods. Frequently named one of the best farmers markets in the country, it is a Sunday ritual for Lakewood Ranch residents and a lovely way to spend an August morning. The lakefront setting at Waterside Place makes it one of the most scenic markets in Southwest Florida. Live music and family activities are part of the market experience.

Sunday Brunch on Main Street

Several Main Street restaurants offer Sunday brunch service. Lakewood Ranch Main Street has a strong brunch scene, with options ranging from casual cafes to full-service restaurants.
