The second full weekend of September brings a lovely mix of music, markets, and waterfront weather to Southwest Florida. Downtown Sarasota, Downtown Lakewood Ranch, and Downtown Bradenton each have something worth your time from Friday through Monday. Downtown Sarasota This Weekend (September 11-14)
Downtown Sarasota pairs a landmark 9/11 tribute from the Sarasota Orchestra with a classic Saturday farmers market, the closing weekend of a major photography exhibition at Selby Botanical Gardens, and a comedy headliner at the Van Wezel.
Friday, September 11
Summon the Heroes: A 9/11 Tribute Concert
The Sarasota Orchestra presented Summon the Heroes, a 25th anniversary 9/11 tribute concert honoring local first responders, earlier this week at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. With music by Copland, Barber, and John Williams and narration by Nate Jacobs, the program benefited area emergency groups in connection with the anniversary weekend.
Fernando Ferrarone Quartet at Fogartyville
525 Kumquat Court, 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Friday night, the Fernando Ferrarone Quartet plays at Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, the home of WSLR Community Radio, just south of downtown. Tickets run about $25 for members and $30 for the general public, with a $15 student rate. It is an intimate, well-loved listening room.
Music and Dinner on Main Street
Restaurants along Main Street and Palm Avenue fill early on Friday evenings. Several downtown spots book local musicians on the weekend. Lineups change weekly, so check individual restaurant and venue schedules before you head out. A patio table on Lemon Avenue is prime people-watching territory.
Sunset on the Bayfront

Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market
Lemon Avenue and Main Street, 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Free admission. Rain or shine. The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market has been a Saturday ritual since 1979. This week more than 70 vendors bring fresh Florida produce, prepared foods, flowers, artisan bread, and live music to Lemon Avenue. Arrive early for the best selection.
Selby Botanical Gardens: Closing Weekend of Shared Light
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 1534 Mound Street. This is the final weekend of Shared Light: The Photography of Lynn Goldsmith, an exhibition of celebrity portraits and fine-art photography, closing Sunday, September 13. The gardens also host the 46th Annual Juried Photographic Exhibition through September 30. Wander the tropical collections and the bayfront grounds under the historic banyan trees.
Live Music Around Downtown
Live music continues around downtown on Saturday evening, from The Blue Note to the restaurants of Palm Avenue. Lineups change weekly, so check venue schedules before you head out.

Ron White at the Van Wezel
Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 7:30 PM. Comedian Ron White brings his stand-up tour to the bayfront on Sunday night. It is a polished end to the weekend for anyone who likes comedy at a proper theater.
Final Day of Shared Light at Selby
Sunday is the last day of the Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith exhibition at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Pair the exhibit with the gardens' tropical collections for a full morning, then head to the bayfront for the Van Wezel show that evening.
Sunday Stroll on the Bayfront
Sarasota Bayfront and Marina. A Sunday afternoon walk along the bayfront, connecting the marina, the Van Wezel, and The Bay Sarasota, is one of the simplest pleasures in the city. Stop for coffee, watch the boats, and soak in the relaxed pace.

Sights + Sounds at Waterside Place: Brass Quintet
Waterside Place, 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Free. As part of the monthly Sights and Sounds performance and fine arts series, the Pops Orchestra Brass Quintet performs live at Waterside Place. No registration is needed. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music on the lakefront plaza.
Movie in the Park at Waterside Park
7:00 PM at sunset. Free, family-friendly, outdoor. The second Friday of the month brings a free movie to Waterside Park, and September's showing is a family favorite. Admission is free, and it is a relaxed, low-cost way to spend the evening.

Live Music and Dinner at Waterside Place

Tribute to Heroes Ceremony at Rossi Park
Rossi Park, 9:30 AM. Free. On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the Manatee County Fire Chiefs Association hosts the Tribute to Heroes ceremony on the Bradenton Riverwalk. Expect an honor guard, a 21-gun salute, and a dove release. It is a respectful, worthwhile way to open the weekend.
