The first full weekend of September is a great one to spend in Southwest Florida. Labor Day Monday makes it a three-day weekend for many. Downtown Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, and Downtown Bradenton each have something worth your time from Friday night through Monday. Downtown Sarasota This Weekend (September 4-7)

Downtown Sarasota brings a mix of farmers market tradition, a supercar showcase across the bay, and a holiday weekend pace on the bayfront. September evenings are warm, and start-of-season energy is in the air.

Friday, September 4

Live Music Around Downtown

Friday night is one of the liveliest of the week for live music in Downtown Sarasota. Restaurants like Mattison's City Grille on Lemon Avenue often book local musicians for weekends. Its outdoor patio is prime people-watching territory. Venues like The Blue Note keep a rotating calendar of bands all year. Lineups change weekly, so check individual venue schedules before you head out.

Friday Dinner on Main Street

The restaurant row along Main Street and Palm Avenue fills early on Friday evenings. From Italian classics at Cafe Epicure to seafood at Owen's Fish Camp, and creative small plates at Indigenous, these options are some of the best in the region. Late summer evenings are warm. The bay breeze keeps patio dining comfortable. Reservations are a good idea at the popular spots.

Sunset on the Bayfront

End Friday with a sunset walk along the bayfront at The Bay Sarasota. The 53-acre park is open from sunrise to sunset, and always free. Paths connect the marina, and the bay. Watch the boats come in as the light fades, and ease into the long weekend at a relaxed pace.

Saturday, September 5

Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market

Lemon Avenue and Main Street, 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Free admission. Rain or shine. The Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market has been a Saturday ritual since 1979. Each week more than 70 vendors bring fresh Florida produce, prepared foods, flowers, artisan bread, and live music to Lemon Avenue. Arrive early for the best selection. Grab a breakfast pastry, and coffee, and enjoy the music that fills the open-air market. It is the quintessential Sarasota Saturday morning experience.

Exotic Cars on the Circle

St. Armands Circle Park is a short drive from downtown across the bay. A free showcase of exotic supercars, sponsored by Sage Auto Studios, and Ferrari Drivers SRQ, brings dozens of rare machines to the Circle on Saturday. Stroll the park, admire the cars, and pair it with lunch or shopping along St. Armands Circle. It is a fun, family-friendly way to spend a Saturday morning.

Bat Boy: The Musical

Performances of Bat Boy: The Musical are scheduled for the weekend at a Sarasota-area theater. Saturday evening show at 7:30 PM. Sunday matinee at 2:00 PM. The cult-favorite musical has a devoted following for its blend of heart, humor, and horror. Tickets, and venue details are available through the presenting theater's website.

An Afternoon at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is just south of downtown. The gardens host an exhibition of photographer Lynn Goldsmith, featuring celebrity portraits, and fine-art photography, running through September 13. Wander the tropical collections, and the bayfront grounds. Cool off beneath the canopy of the historic banyan trees. It is also open Sunday, making it a flexible weekend option.

Brunch at The Bay

The Bay Sarasota is hosting Brunch at The Bay this weekend, bringing live music to the bayfront park. Pair it with a slow Sunday morning walk along the water, and you have an easy, relaxed start to the day. Check The Bay's calendar for exact times, and performers.

Sunday Matinee: Bat Boy: The Musical

The Sunday matinee of Bat Boy: The Musical starts at 2:00 PM. It pairs nicely with a morning at Selby Gardens, or a stop at the Farmers Market earlier in the day.

Sunday Stroll on the Bayfront

Sarasota Bayfront, and Marina. A Sunday afternoon walk along the Bayfront is one of the simplest pleasures in Sarasota. The path connects the marina, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, and The Bay Sarasota to form a continuous waterfront route. Stop for coffee, watch the boats, and soak in the relaxed Sunday pace before the holiday Monday.

Monday, September 7: Labor Day

Labor Day on the Bayfront

Monday is Labor Day. Downtown Sarasota offers a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The Bay Sarasota is open for walking, and picnicking. Downtown cafes, and restaurants welcome the holiday crowd, and the waterfront trail is a great place to start the day. Many galleries, and shops along Main Street, and Palm Avenue keep regular hours on the holiday. Event, and attraction hours can vary on holiday weekends, so it pays to check ahead.

Downtown Lakewood Ranch This Weekend (September 4-7)

Lakewood Ranch offers two polished walkable hubs:the original Main Street district, and Waterside Place along the lake. This weekend, a signature Music on Main street party headlines Friday night, and the celebrated Sunday farmers market returns at Waterside Place.

Friday, September 4

Music on Main

Main Street Lakewood Ranch, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Free. Lakewood Ranch's signature street-party concert series returns on Friday night. A live band, food vendors, beer trucks, sponsor booths, and inflatables plus kids' activities fill the street. It is the heart of the Lakewood Ranch social calendar, and a wonderful way to open the long weekend. Bring a chair, or plan dinner around the music, and stroll Main Street while you listen.

Live Music at The Plaza

The Plaza, Main Street Lakewood Ranch. Up the street from the main stage, The Plaza keeps its lakefront stage going with live music overlooking the water. Grab a drink at one of the surrounding spots, and enjoy the show with a view.

Live DJ at Allswell

Allswell, known for craft cocktails, and a lively open-air bar, hosts a live DJ on Friday night. It is a good spot to close out Music on Main with drinks, and a soundtrack.

Friday Night at Ed's Tavern

Ed's Tavern, Main Street Lakewood Ranch. The neighborhood favorite hosts live music every Friday night, with a strong beer selection, and an easygoing crowd. Stop in after Music on Main for a nightcap, and some live tunes.

Saturday, September 5

Saturday Live Music on Main Street

Live music is a Saturday regular at several Main Street spots. Remy's on Main serves coastal American fare with open-air seating. Peculiar Pub keeps a lively gastropub stage going Saturday nights. Either way, dinner, drinks, and listening come together in one easy evening.

Sarasota Paradise vs. Spokane Velocity FC

Premier Sports Campus, Lakewood Ranch, 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Professional soccer comes to the Lakewood Ranch area on Saturday night. Sarasota Paradise hosts Spokane Velocity FC. Gates open early, and the atmosphere is family-friendly. Check the club for ticketing, and any pre-match activities.

Evening at Waterside Place

Waterside Place, 1560 Lakefront Drive. Even without a formal event, the central plaza with its water features, the covered pavilion, and the surrounding restaurants make it a lovely spot for a Saturday evening dinner. Try Cooper's Hawk Winery, and Restaurant, The Capital Grille, or Good Liquid Brewing Company, and watch the fountain light up as the sky darkens over the lake.

Sunday, September 6

Farmers Market at Lakewood Ranch

Waterside Place, 1560 Lakefront Drive, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Free to browse. The award-winning farmers market returns on Sunday. It is consistently named one of the best farmers markets in Florida, and the country. A big lineup of local vendors brings farm-fresh produce, prepared foods, artisan bread, specialty spices, and live music to the lakefront plaza. It is a Sunday ritual for Lakewood Ranch residents, and a lovely way to spend a September morning.

Sunday Brunch on Main Street

Several Main Street restaurants serve Sunday brunch, from casual cafes to full-service spots. Pair brunch with a visit to the farmers market at Waterside Place for a complete Sunday morning. Some restaurants adjust hours on holiday weekends, so a quick call ahead is a good idea.

Monday, September 7: Labor Day

Labor Day in Lakewood Ranch

Monday is a quieter day in Lakewood Ranch, but both Main Street, and Waterside Place are open for dining, shopping, and strolling on the holiday. The lakefront path at Waterside Place offers a peaceful setting for an evening walk, or a casual dinner, and many restaurants extend weekend hours through Monday. Check with individual venues for any holiday live music or specials.

Downtown Bradenton This Weekend (September 4-7)

Downtown Bradenton kicks off the weekend with the Village of the Arts Art Walk, and Market. Saturday night brings minor-league baseball under the lights at LECOM Park. Add the Riverwalk into the mix, and you have a full, authentically Gulf Coast weekend.

Friday, September 4

Village of the Arts Art Walk, and Market

Village of the Arts, 1227 12th Avenue West, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The monthly First Friday Art Walk continues 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The historic arts district fills with galleries, studios, live music, and food vendors across restored 1920s bungalows. This Labor Day weekend edition of the art walk makes it one of the best weekends of the month to explore the Village, meet artists in their studios, and pick up one-of-a-kind pieces.

Live Music at Downtown Venues

Live music pops up across downtown Bradenton on Friday nights, from the beer garden at Motorworks Brewing to wine bars along Old Main Street. Lineups change weekly, so check individual venue calendars before heading out.

Sunset on the Riverwalk

The Bradenton Riverwalk is free, and open for an evening stroll along the Manatee River. Friday sunset over the water is one of the best free shows in downtown, and the shaded pavilions along the promenade are perfect places to take it in.

Saturday, September 5

Village of the Arts Art Walk, and Market, Day Two

Village of the Arts, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A second day to tour open studios, browse galleries, and shop the Village's eclectic shops. Many artists are in their studios on Saturday, making it a relaxed, unhurried way to spend a morning.

Bradenton Marauders vs. Lakeland Flying Tigers

LECOM Park, Downtown Bradenton, gates open at 5:00 PM. First pitch at 6:30 PM. Fan Appreciation Night brings prizes, and giveaways throughout the game, and a postgame drone show caps the evening. Minor-league baseball at the historic ballpark is a classic late-summer outing, and a great way to spend a Saturday night with the family.

Saturday on the Riverwalk

Bradenton Riverwalk, free. Saturday is the most active day on the Riverwalk. The 1.5-mile waterfront promenade is filled with walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families throughout the day. A skate park, splash pad, fitness stations, and playgrounds keep kids entertained for hours. Packa picnic, rent a bike, or find a shaded bench, and watch the boats glide along the Manatee River.

Sunday, September 6

Sunday Afternoon on the Riverwalk

Bradenton Riverwalk, free. Sunday afternoon is the quietest time on the Riverwalk, perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride along the Manatee River. The breeze off the water keeps things comfortable, and the splash pad is a favorite with families. It is also a lovely spot to watch boats, and the drawbridge on a slow Sunday.

Live Music and Sunday Dinner

Several downtown venues, including Motorworks Brewing's beer garden, often have live music on weekends. Afterward, Old Main Street offers a varied dinner scene ranging from Italian classics to Latin American kitchens. Sunday dinner is a quieter affair in Bradenton, with a more relaxed pace than Friday or Saturday nights.

Monday, September 7: Labor Day

Labor Day on the Riverwalk

Monday is Labor Day, and the Bradenton Riverwalk is the perfect place to enjoy a holiday day off. The full lineup of amenities, the skate park, splash pad, playgrounds, and fitness stations, is open, and many downtown restaurants, and cafes offer regular hours or holiday specials. The Riverwalk is also a great spot for an early evening walk to watch the sunset over the Manatee River.
