Relocating to Sarasota

Moving from Connecticut to Sarasota, Florida

Written by Kim Donahue, REALTOR® with Medway Realty | 30+ Years of Real Estate Experience · Updated July 18, 2026

Connecticut residents have been relocating to Florida in significant numbers for years, and Sarasota is one of the most popular destinations. The reasons are consistent: lower taxes, warmer weather, more space for the money, and a lifestyle that prioritizes outdoor living. For Connecticut homeowners accustomed to some of the highest property tax rates in the country, the financial benefits of moving to Sarasota are substantial.

Why are Connecticut residents moving to Sarasota?

The tax burden is the leading driver. Connecticut's state income tax reaches 6.99%, and its property taxes are among the highest in the nation — averaging 2.14% of assessed value. For a homeowner with a $500,000 property in Fairfield County, annual property taxes can easily exceed $10,000. In Sarasota, the effective property tax rate is lower, and Florida's homestead exemption reduces taxable value by up to $50,000 for primary residences, with no state income tax on top of that.

But the decision is rarely only financial. Connecticut winters, while shorter than those in New England neighbors, still bring cold temperatures and seasonal confinement. Sarasota's mild winters — daytime highs in the low to mid-70s from December through March — make outdoor activities possible year-round. The Gulf Coast beaches, golf courses, cultural venues, and recreational opportunities create a lifestyle that feels like a permanent vacation to many Connecticut transplants.

Key comparison points

Taxes

  • Connecticut income tax: Progressive rates up to 6.99%. A household earning $200,000 pays approximately $8,000 to $12,000 annually.
  • Florida income tax: Zero. No state income tax on wages, retirement income, pensions, or investment gains.
  • Connecticut property taxes: Among the highest nationally, with effective rates averaging over 2.1% of assessed value.
  • Sarasota property taxes: Effective rate of approximately 0.93% to 1.22%, with homestead exemption reducing the taxable base.

Housing costs

Connecticut's housing market, particularly in Fairfield County and along the Gold Coast, is expensive. A $600,000 to $800,000 budget in Connecticut might buy a modest colonial or a small waterfront cottage. In Sarasota, that same budget purchases a three-bedroom single-family home with a pool, or a waterfront condo with Gulf access. New construction communities in Wellen Park, Lakewood Ranch, and North Port offer modern floor plans at competitive price points that appeal to Connecticut buyers accustomed to paying more for less.

Climate and lifestyle

Connecticut offers beautiful autumns and springs, but its winters are cold and linger. Sarasota's year-round warmth transforms how you live day to day. Outdoor dining, beach visits, kayaking, cycling, and golf are available in every season. The cultural scene — anchored by the Ringling Museum, Sarasota Opera, Asolo Theatre, and a calendar packed with festivals and farmers markets — provides the intellectual and social engagement that Connecticut residents value.

Sarasota communities that appeal to Connecticut transplants

  • Longboat Key: Exclusive barrier island with luxury condos and estates. Connecticut buyers accustomed to the shoreline gravitate toward Longboat Key's quiet, upscale coastal lifestyle.
  • Lakewood Ranch: Master-planned community with golf, tennis, pickleball, and active social clubs. Popular with Connecticut families and active adults. See my Lakewood Ranch vs. Sarasota comparison.
  • Downtown Sarasota: Walkable urban core with galleries, dining, and cultural venues. Appeals to Connecticut buyers who want arts, culture, and walkability.
  • Venice: Historic downtown, excellent beaches, and a strong community feel. Popular with retirees and empty nesters. See my guide to living in Venice.
  • Siesta Key: World-famous beach with a relaxed island vibe. Appeals to buyers who want direct beach access and a vacation-at-home lifestyle.

What to expect when you arrive

  • Driver's license and vehicle registration: You have 30 days to obtain a Florida driver's license and 10 days to register your vehicle.
  • Homestead exemption: File with the county property appraiser by March 1. Reduces taxable property value by up to $50,000. See my homestead exemption guide.
  • Homeowners insurance: Florida premiums are higher than Connecticut's. Budget $3,000 to $8,000 annually depending on location. See my Florida homeowners insurance guide.
  • Healthcare: Sarasota Memorial Hospital and a growing network of specialists provide strong healthcare infrastructure. Transfer records early.
