Moving from Maryland to Sarasota, Florida

Maryland is a strong source state for Sarasota relocations, and the pattern is well-established. The Mid-Atlantic climate, with its humid summers and cold winters, combined with Maryland's state income tax rates (which range up to 5.75%) and relatively high property taxes in many counties, creates a compelling case for the move to Florida. Sarasota offers the same humidity in summer but replaces winter with mild, sunny days.
Why are Maryland residents moving to Sarasota?
The proximity to the Chesapeake Bay gives Maryland residents an appreciation for coastal living, and Sarasota's Gulf Coast lifestyle is a natural extension. The financial benefits are significant: Maryland's state income tax ranges from 2% to 5.75%, and counties add their own local income tax on top. Combined property and income tax burdens in Maryland can be substantial. Florida eliminates state income tax entirely, and property tax rates in Sarasota County are competitive.
Maryland winters, while not as harsh as New England's, still bring cold temperatures, snow, and ice. Sarasota's mild winters — daytime highs in the low to mid-70s from December through March — are a major draw. The Gulf Coast beaches, golf courses, and outdoor lifestyle are accessible year-round, not just during a few precious months.
Key comparison points
Taxes
- Maryland income tax: State rates from 2% to 5.75%, plus county income tax (typically 2.5% to 3.2%). Combined rate can reach 8.95%.
- Florida income tax: Zero. No state income tax on any income type.
- Maryland property taxes: Effective rates vary by county, typically 0.8% to 1.2% of assessed value.
- Sarasota property taxes: Effective rate of approximately 0.93% to 1.22%, with homestead exemption reducing taxable value by up to $50,000.
Housing costs
Maryland's housing market, particularly in the Washington D.C. suburbs, is expensive. A $600,000 budget in Montgomery County or Howard County might buy a modest townhome or an older single-family home. In Sarasota, the same budget purchases a three-bedroom home with a pool, or a newer home in a master-planned community. The value difference is most pronounced in the $400,000 to $800,000 range.
